History.
Born in the 51st century, Jack Harkness, or the man to become him, was a time agent. Shortly after a mission, Jack was exiled without a memory, only the notion the time agency had removed it as a punishment for something he did. A conman by nature, Jack adapted to life on the run, stealing a Chula ship and living off his agent training as a thief and adventurer.

His life changed when he met the mysterious traveler the Doctor and his companion Rose Tyler during the London Blitz and a con job involving a Chula medical ship. (The Empty Child and the Doctor Dances). Jack helped the Doctor save the population of London from malfunctioning Chula nanogenes, that infected the population when Jack crashed the medical ship on Earth. When Jack was willing to sacrifice his life to save humanity by taking a bomb from London into the timevortex with his ship, the Doctor rescued him, and he stayed on to be a companion.

During his time with the Doctor, Jack learned responsibility and what it was like to help others rather than serve himself and gave his life fighting the Daleks for Rose and the Doctor.

Rose resurrected him with the time vortex, but he was abandoned on the space station he died on.

Jack was able to travel back to earth to the 19th century where he set up base at in Cardiff on the rift, and eventually made contact with UNIT during the 60s. After the Cyberman invasion (army of Ghosts), with UNIT and the assistance of Brigadier Alistair Lethbridge Stewart, Jack Harkness took over Torchwood at Canary Wharf and set up a new installation. Jack trusted a hand full of personal to run the Cardiff installation, run by Suzie Costello and eventually hired Gwen Cooper later on to work in London with him.

Persona: Fun loving, cheerful, a huge flirt, Jack takes being a hero to heart. Though he does have a darker more thoughtful side, and if capable of going to extremes to get a job done. He is loyal to his friends, and is waiting to see the Doctor and Rose again. Many of the employees of both Torchwoods had been at one point or another touched by the Doctor. Jack has moved past his feelings for the Doctor, but he feels troubled by unanswered questions about his immortality. He does have a bit of a death wish, and a great deal of anger that he does not show openly but can be seen in hints when he fails to be too close to anyone he works with.
